Male Breast ReductionAchieve a More Classically Masculine Appearance
Let me start by sharing that gynecomastia is a super common problem, and that I had it and hated it! Once I had surgery to fix it, I went from not liking the appearance of my chest to taking my shirt off any time there’s a bit of sun!
Approximately 40 to 60 percent of all men have some degree of gynecomastia — a medical condition that you may have heard of by a different name: “man boobs.” It’s not uncommon for my male patients to say they are embarrassed, self-conscious or simply unhappy with their man boobs. Physically, overly large breasts can be uncomfortable, and emotionally, having woman-like breasts can drastically affect a man’s self-esteem and confidence.
If you’re one of the many men affected by man boobs, I invite you to come see me to learn more about male breast reduction surgery.
What Causes Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is characterized by enlarged or overdeveloped breast tissue in men. For many patients, the condition first becomes apparent during adolescence, but it can occur at any age. Although a direct cause is not clear, research shows that hormonal imbalances, certain medical conditions and use of certain medications can contribute to gynecomastia
Are You an Ideal Candidate?
You may benefit from male breast reduction surgery if you experience physical and emotional discomfort from having overly large breast tissue. Common forms of physical discomfort include painful chafing, rashes and irritation caused by excess folds of skin rubbing against each other. Emotionally, overly large breast tissue can be a source of embarrassment and low self-esteem. By modifying the breast tissue, male breast reduction can help you feel more masculine and confident.
How I Perform Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Although common, gynecomastia looks different on different men. Because of this, it is important to customize treatment and surgical technique to the needs of each individual patient. I determine my surgical technique based on the amount of tissue removed, whether excess fat is present, the skin quality and other factors. Depending on your unique case, your procedure can include one or more of the following:
- Tissue excision to remove glandular tissue from the chest area, which I almost always have to do, unless your excess breast tissue is only fat.
- Liposuction to remove pockets of excess fat — not only behind the nipple, but also on the chest edge to give it a more cut, masculine appearance.
- Skin removal and tightening to improve the appearance of sagging. This is a sticky one. IF you really have too much skin, I will remove the excess right away, but of course that leaves a scar. I had gynecomastia myself and I really didn’t want a visible scar, so I try to avoid or at least minimize scars on my patients’ chests too! If you only have a little bit of extra skin, I usually suggest not making a long scar but only removing the excess fat and gland through small incisions. Then we wait three months to see how much of your excess skin shrinks back. If we still need to remove a little skin, we can do that as a minor procedure under local anesthesia only (without an added surgeon’s charges for the touchup).
- Modification of the nipples and areolas to improve their size and position on the breast: Many guys have puffy, wide areolas (the dark area around the nipple) or just long or really large nipples. We can fix that.
Male breast reduction is performed using anesthesia to ensure that you won’t feel any pain or discomfort during surgery. The exact placement and size of the incisions depend on what exactly needs to be corrected during surgery. Rest assured that I will create the incisions with extreme precision, and place them carefully to minimize the possibility of scarring
