OtoplastyEar Reshaping Surgery in Sacramento
Otoplasty is one of only a few plastic surgery procedures performed on children as young as 4 years old. Protruding, overly large or irregularly shaped ears can be a source of low self-esteem — not to mention bullying or teasing — for many of these young patients. Many teenagers and adults are also bothered by the size or appearance of their ears and seek otoplasty as a result.
Otoplasty is a very safe and straightforward surgical procedure. During otoplasty, I can reshape, resize and reposition the ears as needed. I use a precise and well-planned approach to modify the proportions of the ears in a way that looks completely natural.
The Benefits of Otoplasty
Otoplasty is one of the most rewarding procedures I perform at my Sacramento practice. The surge in self-confidence I see in my patients, young and old, is apparent immediately after they have healed from surgery. After otoplasty, you or your child will no longer have to be self-conscious about ears that stick out in any way and attract unwanted attention. Child patients in particular experience a boost in self-esteem as they are no longer a subject of bullying or teasing from classmates and peers.
Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Otoplasty?
Ideal candidates for otoplasty are individuals who are bothered by the shape, size, position or symmetry of the ears. Otoplasty can also be used to address structural defects caused by injury, illness or genetic conditions.
In order to qualify for otoplasty, children’s ears must have finished developing. This usually occurs around age 4. Both children and adult patients must be in good overall health and free of chronic ear infections or other medical conditions that can impair the healing process. I meet with adult patients on an individual basis, and young patients with their parents to evaluate candidacy and discuss all aspects of otoplasty in detail.
There are several approaches I can use during otoplasty. In most cases, I will make the incision behind the ear where scarring will be hidden. To correct misshapen ears, I sculpt the cartilage into the desired shape. To correct protruding or misshapen ears, I remove skin and cartilage as needed and reposition the remaining skin and cartilage using permanent sutures.
Otoplasty is usually performed using sedation for adult patients, and general anesthesia for child patients.
Recovering from Otoplasty
Recovering from otoplasty can take one to two weeks for both child and adult patients. Patients will need to take time off from school, work and other normal activities. Normal side effects include soreness, swelling and bruising, which should subside over time. My team will provide specific instructions for you to follow during recovery, including sleep position restrictions. We will also schedule follow-up appointments so we can monitor your recovery and ensure you’re healing quickly.
My team and I strive to put patients young and adult at ease by cultivating a safe and comfortable environment. The first step is to meet with you during an in-person consultation. We will answer all of your questions and put your concerns at ease so you can feel confident in your selection of procedure and surgeon.
